Gina's Story

Posted: 05/25/2006

I'm thankful to live in a state that is mostly pro choice.

I'm thankful to live in a state that is mostly pro choice. I moved here from a state that is not so pro choice and even has limitations on getting the morning after pill (called Plan B there) if you need it. I'm a 39 year old single mom to two kids, and I'm responsible. I used protection, and the protection failed (condom slipped off inside me). I used Plan B the next day (due to trouble finding someone to prescribe it, and then fill it) to ensure I wouldn't get pregnant. After that incident , I went to my doctor and got Mirena (an IUD) put in, so hopefully there will be no more "accidents" that requires the use of secondary, morning after protection. I can only imagine the hell I would have went through trying to find an abortion provider, IF I had ended up pregnant and IF I had chose to abort it. I'm thankful that didn't happen, but it sure opened my eyes to just how volatile the climate is in some states regarding a woman's right to choose.

As an aside...I'm going to have to appeal my insurance company, as they don't cover the Mirena IUD. This is the year 2006 and it seems absolutely shocking to me that insurance companies are still refusing to cover birth control for women. I am a very high risk pregnancy. My last pregnancy was high risk from start to finish and the delivery was high risk as well. I'm thankful for my daughter and that she was born healthy. Any future pregnancies are likely to be as high risk, if not more so. They are willing to pay for that, which costs thousands of dollars, but they won't cover my $618 dollar IUD! It makes NO sense to me. I'm appealing it, but I'm being told there is a high probability they will stand firm on not covering it and I will be forced to pay it. I suppose that is still the best decision I made, even if I have to pay for it, although as a single mom, who's medically disabled it will be a hardship to pay that bill if that's the end result. Anyhow, I just wanted to voice my opinion.
