Accomplishments, Achievements, and Future Goals for EBC Project
· Worked with OPB to secure one of the premier policies in the county for ensuring pharmacy access to EBC notwithstanding any individual pharmacist’s objections. All Oregon pharmacists received the new versions of this policy with their April 2007 license renewal packets. The OPB compliance review inspectors will assess each pharmacy for compliance with this new policy in the coming year and we will be sure to play an active role in this assessment.
· Trained close to 400 pharmacists in the state of Oregon with six trainings throughout the state. There was a focus on providing accessible training for pharmacists from rural communities. Post-training surveys found that [participating pharmacist had an increased level of knowledge about how EBC works, and many common misconceptions were dispelled. Of those who were opposed to dispensing EBC pre-training, only 27% remained opposed after the training. Our traveling team included:
o Don Downing, Professor of Pharmacy at the University of Washington, who has offered EBC training to pharmacists in 23 states across the country.
o Sara Ainsworth, JD, of Northwest Women’s Law Center, who trains around the legal aspects of EBC dispensing and refusal
· Hired an EBC Project Pharmacist, George Gerding, who has over 30 years of experience and a commitment to ensuring a collaborative relationship between women’s advocacy efforts and pharmacists. George will be conducting one-on-one peer outreach and education in targeted communities across the state.
· Trained members and other volunteers to complete “mystery shopper” telephone surveys of pharmacists in order to identify where access issues exist. These surveys lead to the development of a detailed assessment of gaps in pharmacist knowledge of EBC.
· Developed a “Plot Map of EBC Access” that visually displays underserved areas or Oregon, as well as detailed and interactive information relating to pricing and availability throughout the state. This is an excellent tool for any woman seeking EBC within the state of Oregon.
· Developed a comprehensive EBC Tool Kit for pharmacists that offers detailed information about EBC, dispels common misconceptions and explains counseling techniques and OHP/FPEP participation rules. The Tool Kit will also be reformulated to address other clinical and non-clinical providers. A version for reformulated to address other clinical and non-clinical providers. A version for advocates, supporters and consumers will also be available here on our website.
· Completed a detailed report on the state of EBC Access in nine counties to date. These comprehensive reports will be useful for allies to help us formulate county-specific action plans.
· We have also been chosen as the sole 2008 pro-bono client for the advertising agency Borders Perrin and Norrander (BPN). BPN only accepts one pro-bono client each year, which must be approved by unanimous consent of all BPN employees. After a formal presentation, partners said they were “impressed and inspired.” As a result, they will assist in the development and implementation of an EBC public education campaign.
