Mifepristone/RU-486

Posted: 07/10/2007

Despite what Bush claims, FDA-approved Mifepristone, when taken with the proper medical supervision, is not dangerous to a woman's health.

  • The FDA approved Mifepristone, which is also known as RU-486, in September 2000 for use in combination with misoprostol, as an early option for nonsurgical abortion.
  • Over 620,000 women have safely used mifepristone as an early option for nonsurgical abortion in Europe. Furthermore, U.S. clinical trials have shown the mifepristone/misoprostol combination to be successful, safe and highly satisfactory to patients.
  • Despite claims of anti-choice ideologues, RU-486 is not dangerous to a woman’s health when taken with proper medical supervision.
  • In Oregon physicians who prescribe mifepristone must also be able to provide surgical intervention in cases of incomplete abortion or severe bleeding-or they must have made plans in advance to provide such care through others.
