Oregon Governor Signs Sex Ed Bill
NARAL Pro-Choice Oregon is proud to announce that Gov. Ted Kulongoski on Tuesday signed HB 2509, which requires school districts to provide students in all public elementary and secondary schools with medically accurate, age-appropriate sex education courses. The law requires that students be given current, statistically based information about the efficacy of all methods of preventing STIs and says that sex education courses must include instruction on the benefits of delaying pregnancy until after adolescence, as well as information about the characteristics of an emotionally and physically healthy relationship. The law directs schools to provide students with information on state laws related to young people's rights and responsibilities with regard to childbearing and parenting. HB 2509 was modeled after an administrative rule implemented in 2007 with the hard work of NARAL Pro-Choice Oregon, working in coalition with the Oregon Department of Education.
