Federal Court to Rule on Nebraska Law
This month a federal judge will decide whether to block a new Nebraska law requiring mental health screenings for women seeking abortions. Planned Parenthood of Heartland will appear before U.S. District Judge Laurie Smith Camp on July 13th to challenge the law. If held up it would require women to be screened by a doctor to determine whether they were pressured into seeking an abortion and to identity risk factors that could suggest mental or physical problems after an abortion. Supporters attest the law could prevent medical problems if the procedure is preformed and limit the chance of lawsuits if problems result. Planned Parenthood has said "The act would ban abortions in Nebraska by imposing, as a condition to performing lawful abortions, impossible, unintelligible, and unprecedented so-called 'informed consent' requirements on abortion providers that vastly stray from accepted and, indeed, good medical practice."
