High Risk Insurance Pools Denied Abortion Coverage
President Obama has directred Health and Human Services secretary Kathleen Sebelius to issue a regulation for the high-risk insurance pools created by healthcare reform. These high risk pools were created for the most medically vulnerable citizens, and consequently, the most susceptible to pregnancy complications. These regulations will mean that women in these polls with not be allowed abortion coverage beyond rape, incest and endangerment. They will also not be given the option to pay for the abortion with their own funds. Cecile Richards, CEO of Planned Parenthood, says “The final health care reform bill included extensive restrictions on using federal funds to pay for abortion coverage, but this new ban goes beyond what it is in the law.
