FDA Approves New 5-Day Emergency Contraceptive
On Friday, the FDA approved a new, longer-lasting emergency contraceptive or “morning after pill” to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex. The new drug, Ella, has been shown to be safe and effective for up to five days after unprotected sex. According to the FDA and Watson Pharmaceuticals, Ella appears to work primarily by preventing the release of a woman's egg during this five day period. Unlike Plan B, which is sold over-the-counter, Ella will require a prescription for all ages. Even so, the new drug has been hailed as a significant expansion in women’s options after unprotected sex or failure of primary birth control methods. Ella will be launched toward the end of 2010.
