Miers’ Withdrawal Exposes Right Wing Power over White House
(Portland, OR) – Darr Durham, Chair of NARAL Pro-Choice Oregon, stated that President Bush’s withdrawal of Harriet Miers as a nominee for the Supreme Court makes it clear that his Administration is listening exclusively to the radical right when making critical judicial selections.
“Supreme Court nomination withdrawals are quite unusual. Miers’ withdrawal exposes the right wing’s real agenda, and how much power these extreme conservatives have over the White House. They won’t be satisfied unless the president selects a nominee who will move the Court towards destruction of civil liberties.
The right wing demands a nominee who is an avowed opponent of Roe v. Wade, and of the many progressive values Oregonians cherish. Oregon is a state with a profound recognition of the importance of personal freedom and responsibility. We expect Sandra Day O’Connor’s replacement to embrace a judicial philosophy consistent with these values – values that O’Connor has upheld.”
Ms. Durham went on to emphasize that the next nominee must give clear answers to direct questions regarding privacy and choice. The Administration’s policy of confusion and obfuscation – exhibited in both the Roberts and Miers cases – has to end. She concludes: “This President is not serving the American people – he is serving the special interest groups that put him in office.”
