Oregon Choice PAC was authorized on Tuesday by the Federal Elections Commission. “This is a very exciting step forward for NARAL Pro-Choice Oregon,” said Pro-Choice Oregon Executive Director Michele Stranger Hunter. “For years we have taken the lead on state and legislative races. Now we have the ability to communicate with all Oregonians on every race—state and federal.” This move positions Pro-Choice Oregon to play more heavily in federal races, including the U.S. Senate seat being challenged by Jeff Merkley. Without a federal Pac, NARAL Pro-Choice Oregon was prohibited from speaking to the public about Gordon Smith’s extreme anti-choice views. “This is an important gain for the choice movement in Oregon,” said Stranger Hunter. “The nomination of Sarah Palin has moved choice to the forefront of electoral politics and now more than ever, we need to be able to advocate for federal candidates who are committed to protecting a woman’s right to choose.” “This could not have come at a better time,” added Oregon Choice PAC chair Barry Pack. “A woman’s right to make private medical decisions with her doctor is being threatened in a very real way—from the top of the ticket all the way down. NARAL Pro-Choice Oregon is committed to developing and sustaining a constituency which effectively uses the political process to guarantee every woman the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion. Oregon Choice PAC is affiliated with NARAL Pro-Choice America PAC.
