Every person should be able to decide for themselves if, when and with whom to start or grow a family.
The right to choose abortion is essential to ensuring that everyone can decide for themselves if, when and with whom to start or grow a family. We’ll never stop fighting to protect and expand this fundamental human right.
The Supreme Court’s landmark 1973 decision in Roe v. Wade affirmed abortion as a constitutional right for all. Since then, we have been forced to defend this right over and over again as anti-choice politicians and organizations have continually promote laws and regulations that make abortion harder to access and more stigmatized in our communities, with the ultimate goal of outlawing abortion completely. These laws and restrictions take many forms, including bans on abortion procedures, unnecessary regulations meant to shut down clinics, restricting access based on income level, and forcing medically inaccurate information to be shared with women considering abortion care.
In Oregon, however, we have spent 40 years fighting for reproductive freedom and are proud to say that Oregon is the ONLY state in the nation with no legislative restrictions on abortion.
We worked to pass the nation’s most progressive reproductive health policy into law. The Reproductive Health Equity Act (House Bill 3391) is the first legislation in the United States to comprehensively address systemic barriers to accessing reproductive health care, expanding coverage to thousands of Oregonians throughout the state – regardless of income, citizenship status or gender identity.
Seven in 10 Americans support the right to legal abortion. Pro-Choice Oregon will continue to fight to keep abortion safe and legal people who can become pregnant, regardless of zip code, gender marker, income, or documentation status. We will mobilize together to defeat attacks in Oregon and in Congress.
We will help elect candidates who will be champions for reproductive freedom. And we will continue to educate, inform and rally our members to protect and expand the fundamental human right of all people to make their own decisions about their lives.
